    Rick

My health insurance provides some dental insurance but just through one defined provider. When I am told that I need a procedure that is expensive (for example crowns) and insurance provides little coverage, I wonder sometimes if I ought to get a second opinion.

Perhaps that is something that you might consider addressing in a future newsletter or elsewhere.

I have never been one of your patients, I just know you and your family from when you lived in Kaysville.

Rick Willoughby, who posted this comment months ago, is actually someone I consider a good friend. Rick and I lived in the same neighborhood in Kaysville, Utah for several years.

Getting a second opinion can always be an option for any patient. In my office we offer 2nd opinions for anyone at no charge, so as not to discourage someone from seeking a 2nd opinion for financial reasons.

A patient seeking a 2nd opinion does so because they question something about the 1st recommendation, or opinion. I would encourage you to be open with your dentist and express your concerns. If they are technical in nature, go ahead and ask your dentist about the techniques or materials, or procedures involved. If your concern regards medical conditions, you should ask. Again, if your questions are financial in nature, go ahead and ask your questions, express your concerns. Give your dentist an opportunity to answer those questions. If you are still not comfortable, then seek out a 2nd opinion.

Rick’s comment also dealt with insurance companies. Please remember that insurance companies are not concerned about what is best for you. In my opinion, insurance companies are concerned about their bottom line. They often recommend procedures that are below the standards of care, in order to protect their profits. If you don’t believe me, ask another dentist for a 2nd opinion :).
