Purpose: the “Why”
Understanding Purpose and Working Together

Understanding Purpose and Working Together

What is your purpose in life?  Why do you exist?  Why do you get up each morning?  Why do you work in your specific field of labor?

“Purpose” answers the question “Why”.  Many will tell you that their purpose in life is to enjoy every moment to its fullest, or excel in their profession, or perhaps to serve God, or to make others happy.  In my opinion all of these are noble and good purposes.

I have found that over time my Purpose has changed.  When I was young my Purpose was more self-centered:  to be well-fed, or to experience new things.  As I have matured my Purpose has become more towards others:  how can I best help those around me (at least this tends to be the major part of my New Year Resolutions each year!)?

As a husband and father, having a purpose focused on those around me makes life very rich.  I find my greatest joy in life within my family.  When I do something for a family member that “lifts” them, helps them, serves them, or makes them happy, I feel tremendous joy and fulfillment.  My children are learning this much quicker than I have.  Recently my daughter asked me to purchase whole wheat bagels at the grocery store instead of the “plain” bagels that they usually beg for.  I asked her why she would want these, and she quietly said that the whole wheat bagels were for her mom (my wife) who prefers the whole wheat variety.   My daughter then reminded me that “tomorrow is Mom’s half-birthday” and she wanted to prepare a special breakfast for her mom on that day.

I cannot write well enough to describe the glow that my daughter had as she prepared her mother’s breakfast the next morning.  Serving, helping, and loving others brings tremendous joy in life.

As an individual you can define your own purpose.  A family can create their own unique purpose.  In fact, we may have many purposes.  Some may rise or fall in degrees of importance depending on circumstances.  But there are always deep, foundational, underlying Purposes that direct
all others.

This is also true of a business.  Corporations may have many purposes such as finding and retaining great employees, providing a valuable service, rising above the competition, being profitable, and becoming more skilled and knowledgeable.  But for every Corporation or business there are underlying, foundational Purposes.

At Chamberlain Dental Health our Team has created a Purpose Statement.  Each week during our staff meeting we spend time reviewing our Purpose to keep it always before us, to remind us why we exist:

 Purpose

Chamberlain Dental Health

Our purpose, the reason that we exist as a business,
is to:

Help others overcome the effects of dental disease.

Educate others towards ideal oral health.

Help others elevate their lives.

Serve others.

This is why we exist as a business.  Each time we meet with a patient we have opportunity to learn, educate, elevate, and serve.  We invite you to visit with us and see how you might benefit from our Purpose at Chamberlain Dental Health.
